Redirecting a URL is the practice of resolving an existing URL to a different URL, telling visitors and Google searches that a page has a new address. Redirects are useful in the following situations:
You've moved your site to a new domain , and you want to make the transition as seamless as possible.
Your site can be accessed from several different URLs . For example, if your homepage can be accessed from multiple sources of these URLs as the preferred (canonical) destination URL and use redirects to direct all traffic from the other URLs to that preferred URL.
You are merging two sites and want to make sure that links to the old URL redirect to the correct page.
You removed a page and want to redirect users to a new page.

Which redirect you choose depends on how long you expect the redirect to last and which page you want Google Search to show in search results:
Permanent redirect : Displays the new redirect destination in search results.
Temporary redirect : Display the source webpage in the search results.
The following table describes the various ways you can set up permanent and temporary redirects , ordered by the likelihood that they will be correctly interpreted by Google (for example, server-side redirects are most likely to be correctly interpreted by Google).
