Sephora’s parent company, LVMH, said the company was critical to its strategy and achieved robust beauty sales growth. During the period, Sephora’s comparable sales declined 6.9% compared to the third quarter of last year. Net sales declined 7.2% from the prior year.
The decline was attributed to product cost inflation and high freight costs. Selling, general and administrative expenses declined 3.3% due to the lack of holiday-focused retention incentives in 2022 and rollout costs from the previous year.
Disciplined cost management played a key role in offsetting the payroll headwind. Sephora’s inventory rose 34% year-over-year, with Kohl’s-based Sephora investments contributing 5%.
In 2018, Sephora’s parent company LVMH reported a 10% increase in revenue to $25.5 billion at physician data current exchange rates in the first half of the year. Organic revenue increased 12% year-over-year, with the U.S., Europe and Asia experiencing strong growth. In the second quarter of the same year, revenue increased 11% year-over-year, with organic revenue also increasing 11%.
Sephora’s retail sales in the U.S. in 2020 were just $5.01 billion, down from $5.9 the year before. The company generates about $10 billion annually. Sephora has just over 28 employees, making more than $350,000 in revenue per employee. In 2021, Sephora’s peak revenue was $10.
