What is B2B and B2C and how are sales different?

There are two main business models in companies: B2C and B2B. B2C means selling to end consumers (Business To Consumer), and B2B is selling to other companies (Business To Business).

Whatever your business model, your company will always offer its product to one of these groups. And the sales strategy you should employ may be completely different in each case.

The important thing to know is that B2C sales don't always work the same way as B2B. The reasons why a company buys a product or service are very different from those of a consumer. And although some strategies can work for both cases, you have to take into account the differences of each model to effectively sell to your customers.

Let’s take a look at these two concepts in depth, and look at the sales strategies you can use to make B2C and B2B sales.

What is B2C
B2C stands for Business To Consumer , and refers to any business model focused on an end consumer. Here you can find companies that offer general consumer services and products - supermarkets, crafts, and sales of consumables, for example. Most businesses that advertise to the general public are B2C companies.

In general terms, the vast majority of the market is made up of sales to end consumers.

Types of B2C businesses
B2C businesses are typically public-facing, accessible to anyone, and looking for a quick and easy purchase. Here are some examples of this type of business:

Food : supermarkets, bakeries
Sale of consumables : cleaning supplies
Home services : telephone, energy, or Internet.
Training : schools, centers, academies
Entertainment : streaming platforms, video games, toys
Equipment : furniture stores, hardware stores, tool sales
Services : shoe shops, tailors, plumbers and electricians
As you can imagine, all these types of companies are looking to reach the average person. The B2C market is by nature saturated, and there is a lot of competition, especially at the price level.
