Diligence or aptitude you bring to your field, but your ability to market it successfully. As SEOs, our responsibility is to help the best of the best become the most noticed, most beloved and most linked-to in their field. It's a strange, almost paradoxical leap of logic, but once you internalize this principle, it gets easier to accept and to spread to your clients and managers.
p.s. I'm also a fan of Chris Dixon's startup, Hunch - I'd urge you to check it out and try answering a few dozen questions. The results are quite fascinating. The area of Indiana where I live australia business email lists was very hard-hit by the economic downturn. I was fed up with being unemployed for the last nine months and was scouring the Internet, looking for a job. ANY job. Then I saw an ad for a local company that called for link building.
"What the heck is 'link building'?" I thought to myself. I could do everything else the ad was asking for, so I thought I'd give it a try, though I'd never even heard of the term 'link building' in my four and a half years at a progressive ad agency. (They were as progressive as their clients allowed them to be, i.e. "It's our company's money and we said this won't work!") *Shudder* When I interviewed for the position, my bosses explained what was involved in the world of SEO and link building.
