If biohacking isn’t going to grow solely on the basis of personal needs and economics, Savulescu says, it will need to develop some kind of moral compass that guides well-being and what enhancements are good for people in general. “Do you want duck lips? Do you want a monkey tail? You’re lucky, you can do that. But we need to define what well-being is, what a good life is, and what good relationships are, and apply those categories to determine what enhancements are good for people and what aren’t,” he says.
Istvan believes that biohacking is, at its core, the next step in people’s quest to become more than they are. “Ultimately, I’m on the side of personal choice, as long as it doesn’t directly harm anyone else,” he said. “Let people make their own decisions, and the market will follow.”
