By Marc Petit, VP/General Manager at Unreal Engine and tools, Epic Games Inc For those of us involved in content creation, real-time 3D is a revolution that is transforming the way we approach both content creation and distribution. It is transforming the economics of creation, but also the creative process. It is opening the door to experiences never seen before and is also impacting the way content is consumed. Real-time photo realism is at your fingertips Real-time rendering technology is at the heart of the real-time 3D revolution.
Graphics chips that are now ubiquitous in our gambling data iran phones, computers, and consoles. Epic Games’ recent “Matrix Awakens” demo shows how Unreal Engine 5 bridges the gap between real-time and traditional production techniques. Over time, other engines will be able to offer similar capabilities. It’s now clear that we can expect to be able to produce simulated worlds and characters that resemble reality using real-time 3D as early as 2022. A new generation of tools and libraries Epic Games is tackling the creation of photorealistic images through interactive frame rate by combining innovative techniques, such as the Nanite virtual geometry system or the Lumen real-time global illumination solution.
Artificial intelligence and simulation are also used to simplify the work of artists with MetaHuman technology that blocks the creation of non-realistic characters by users. Epic has also developed advanced scanning solutions and invested in creating large libraries of reusable objects via MegaScan. It is now very simple and inexpensive for a small team to produce a realistic environment with believable characters. What was once a utopia for the largest visual effects teams is now becoming real for linear or interactive content. Photorealism is rarely a creative goal in itself, its near-zero cost will allow creators to focus all their efforts and resources on art direction and storytelling.
