"If the Chinese press were free, the coronavirus gambling data brazil might not have become a pandemic." These are the words in which Reporters Without Borders (RSF) accused China on March 24 of being directly responsible for the scale of the health crisis.
An analysis by the University of Southampton published the same month, and picked up by the international press freedom organisation, indicated that the number of Covid-19 cases in China could probably have been reduced by 86% if measures to combat the epidemic had been brought forward by two weeks. But in a country ranked 177th out of 180 countries ( Reporting by the World Press Freedom Index 2020 ), censorship and media control quickly prevented the free flow of information.
When it comes to violations of the right to inform, no continent has been spared during the Covid-19 crisis. Since the start of the pandemic, RSF has recorded abuses in 90 of the 193 member states of the United Nations. Attacks on journalists and independent media take various forms, and even arise in countries that are considered democratic. This development has been highlighted by many press freedom organizations around the world (US Press Freedom Tracker, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), etc.)
